Will a Performance Module Void Your Warranty?

Will a Diesel Performance Module Void Your Warranty?

The first question that normally crosses people's minds when they're searching for aftermarket performance products is, "Will this product void my vehicle's manufacturer warranty?" Many people assume that all aftermarket accessories have the potential to void their vehicle's warranty, but this isn't the case. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it so vehicle manufactures can't void a warranty based on the mere presence of aftermarket accessories. However, there are still some aftermarket accessories that will affect your warranty. This begs the question: will a performance module void your warranty as well? Let's find out.

What Causes Voided Warranties?

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents manufacturers from voiding a warranty because of the use of non-brand-name parts. However, manufacturers can still refuse to cover warranty repairs if they can prove that a modification caused some "damage" to the vehicle. For example, if you install a modified exhaust and the exhaust breaks, they can claim that the modified exhaust was the cause of damage and void your warranty for that specific part of the vehicle. Manufacturers can also cancel your warranty for other reasons, such as the use of improper fluids, overloading, or reckless driving.

Tuners vs. Modules

Tuners work by reprogramming the ECU, which controls the entire powertrain. The powertrain consists of the engine, transmission, driveshaft, and the internal workings of the engine. The reason tuners will void your warranty is that they always leave behind a trace of these alterations. Thus, even if you return your vehicle to factory specifications before heading to a dealership, the mechanics will be able to tell that you’ve modified it. They’ll then use that as an excuse to void your powertrain warranty. So, will a performance module void your warranty as well? A performance module won't void your warranty because, unlike tuners, they don't leave behind any traces of modification. Since the dealership won't be able to prove that you messed with the ECU, they’ll lack the legal grounds to void your vehicle’s manufacturer warranty.
